A transformational lumbar interbody fusion is a surgical procedure used to relieve pain and discomfort from the compression of nerve roots in the lumbar spine by removing the degenerated disc that causes nerve root compression.
Before the procedure, anesthesia is administered and the patient is positioned lying face down. After the surgeon identifies the diseased vertebrae level using a portable X-ray, a minimally invasive technique makes a small incision on the patient’s back, directly above the vertebrae. The surgeon endoscopically removes the bone at the rear of the diseased vertebra and carefully rids the diseased disc from the body.
A minimally invasive fusion follows, using our Spine Stabilization technique. Bone graft is placed in the open space to keep vertebrae from collapsing. This procedure sometimes requires screws and rods to be attached to the area to increase stability during the healing process.
Most patients can return home the same day and resume normal activities after a few weeks.
